Offer kids more chances to make emotion potions to match all 6 emotions or whatever they are feeling! All you need is a few jars, water, nature treasures and time to mix!
The Guide
Step 1: Gather your materials.
Gather the following materials for potion making:
- containers like jars, pots or buckets (ideally clear)
- water
- colorful spices, food coloring, or liquid watercolor paint
- objects from nature (e.g. leaves, sticks, acorns, rocks, flower petals, evergreen sprigs, grasses)
Step 2: Prompt thinking and invite play.
Ask, "Do you think we could turn these hare into emotion potions that show the different emotions we feel at different times?"
To spark ideas and help kids build their emotional empathy, you can talk with kids about the six universal emotions—happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust and surprise. Make faces as you do to bring the ideas home.
Ask questions like, “What is it like inside us when we feel these different feelings? What could happy look like? What color might it be?” or “What kinds of things might be rumbling around inside you when you’re angry?”

Step 3: Make emotion potions.
Fill the jars half-way with water and welcome kids to start adding their ingredients, using a stick to stir up their concoctions. Offer kids paper and a marker to label their emotion potions with words or pictures.
Want an extra ingredient? Introduce spices or food coloring to give kids the chance to add color and scent!
Why is this activity great for kids?
Making potions that match different feelings is a super way to get kids talking about and identifying the six main emotions, a key ingredient to emotional empathy. Potion making is also a universally engaging play activity that activates kids senses. As kids make potions, they not only flex their senses of sight, touch and smell, but they also strengthen their ability to integrate their senses.
